Union bars are the allowed splicing method when it is impossible to maintain a single continuous conductor run. They are also used for distributing various physical ground networks in a building.
Their function is to distribute ground wires either directly to the equipment to be protected or through the use of secondary couplers. They ensure electrical continuity and the ability to conduct current.

- They allow the connection to be secure, durable, reliable, and prevent cable joints with insulating tape, caps, or heat-shrink tubing, which are neither safe nor durable.
